What newspaper designer hasn't been contacted by a newsroom editor or designer pleading, "Please, do something about those advertisements." They have a bad appearance. Their choice of colors detracts from the beauty of our pages. They don't seem to fit in with the others.”
We’re not sure anybody has ever succeeded in merging the worlds of newspaper advertising design and editorial design together, even for a brief time. And, of course, it shows.
Newspapers are frequently altered, but the advertising department is rarely involved.
And, when it is, one must accept the fact that advertising departments are under pressure to sell space — and, in all honesty, they cannot impose too many design and visual aesthetics restrictions on those who are purchasing the space.
If the ad is created by a national firm, it is likely to be clean, appealing, and mix in well with the others. Things may differ if the ad is "homemade," as they are in the case of many local or regional newspapers that must appeal to their home consumers.
Here are a few pointers that could be useful:
- Make the ad more clear by avoiding cramming the message into too small a space. If the ad area is three inches deep, prepare to fill half of it with text and the rest with a graphic, or leave it blank and only add the product's brand name. Trying to cram as much information as possible into as little space as possible is what usually results in a slew of unappealing or downright ugly advertising.
- Don't mix fonts; just one or two should be enough. And one is preferable to two. In a small or medium-sized commercial, provide contrast within one typeface rather than developing a font portfolio.
- Find out where the advertisement will appear in the newspaper. Avoid creating an "advertising ghetto" of dozens of ads of the same size strewn together.
- If in doubt, double-check that the advertiser's message appears immediately and clearly and that the ad's canvas is clean and easy to read.
With these rules in mind, we've gathered some Clean uncluttered Newspaper Print Advertisements the integration of advertising and journalism can get off to a good start.

#2 Goonj..a voice and efforts
The Chief Marketing Officer sees a used advertising flex. We see a waterproof roof. Every year, millions of people in rural India struggle to keep the monsoon out of their homes. Meanwhile, acres of used advertising flexes are being disposed of, once their purpose is served. Simply repurposing them could put a roof over someone’s head.
So, if you wish to share any of your unusable or surplus inventory with the less-privileged, please reach out at silverlinings@goonj.org.
